NeurOptimal & Chronic Pain

NeurOptimal® neurofeedback is designed to focus on the central nervous system – the hub of all functions in the human body. With NeurOptimal Neurofeedback, your brain activity is read and reported back to your central nervous system (CNS) at 256 times per second; essentially telling your brain what it is doing in that exact moment. Amongst other things, your brain can realize that it is sending pain signals and re-assess if this is an efficient thing to do.

Pain signals are processed initially in the spinal cord and then in the brain. When pain becomes chronic, the signals to the brain become stuck in an unending loop, even when the initial cause of the pain is no longer there. Chronic pain can be one of the most debilitating conditions in daily life. Chronic pain goes beyond the pain and can interfere with your daily life, keeping you from doing things that you want or need to do. It can take a toll on your self esteem and cause anxiety, depression, frustration, sleep disturbances, lack of appetite, memory & concentration issues and so much more.

When the pain signal gets stuck, the CNS becomes over-stimulated and can remain in the fight or fight response. With NeurOptimal neurofeedback, the brain recognizes each time the CNS is in or going into this state, and the CNS begins to calm or reset. Another way of describing this is that the pain signal is interrupted again and again and over time that signal decreases and the CNS becomes less stuck. As that happens, pain tends to decrease and/or the client's response to pain begins to change. Clients become more mindful and start to think about what they can do to help manage the pain. They are more able to access and use tools like breathing, mindfulness, or meditation to manage the pain when it arises. Clients feel less anxious, and their mood, sleep and memory tend to improve. They are able to do more activities in a day and feel that overall, NeurOptimal has helped them to cope with their pain in a new way.
